Timothy Fosu-Mensah Extends Manchester United Contract

Youth. Courage. Success.

These were the three words marketed by Manchester United last summer, as they welcomed both Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to the club. It’s a slogan that epitomises exactly what the Red Devils stand for, and the type of ethos that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to rebuild his squad around.

We have seen this through the manager’s recruitment policy, but also through his integration of the academy products into the first-team picture. Solskjaer has wasted no time in tying down such prospects, with many youth team members extending their deals with the club.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah is the latest name to be added to the list (via MEN), despite their being initial worries over his future.

United have decided to trigger the one year extension in the Dutchman’s contract, which was initally due to expire this summer. Despite not playing for the first-team since 2017, the club have given the 22-year-old another opportunity to impress.

Solskjaer is opting to lay down a foundation for young talents to impress on, using such players to rejuvenate the core of the squad, which had looked so depleted over the past few seasons.

Like his fellow graduates, Fosu-Mensah has been granted a chance to breakthrough into Man United’s first-team picture, an opportunity that only comes around once in your career.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s Future In Doubt

Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s Manchester United future is in doubt, according to reports in the Mirror.

The Dutchman’s contract expires this summer, meaning he is able to leave the club on a free transfer. United do, however, have the option to trigger a year extension, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly reluctant to do so.

As per the above report, Fosu-Mensah has not received any clarification on his future, suggesting that he will be allowed to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires.

When looking at players that have extended under the Norwegian, it doesn’t bode well for the defender that it’s taken this long for the club to make a decision.

It’s clear that Solskjaer has been tying down his top talents to help build a new young core in the squad, but Fosu-Mensah does not appear to be a part of this vision.

Having initially burst onto the scene under Lous Van Gaal back in 2016, the defender has since undergone a bumpy career journey. He showed glimpses of promise on loan at Crystal Palace, before looking out of his depth whilst at Fulham last season.

If there are no encouraging signs with regards to his contract extension over the next month, it appears likely that he will be packing his bags come summer.
